BANKS Slays Her Demons & Returns As ‘The Devil’

Los Angeles alt-pop goddess BANKS has just unveiled her new release ‘The Devil’ which marks her first release as an independent artist and follows up her 3rd album, iii, released in 2019. A taste of her upcoming album to be released later this year, the track is co-produced by BANKS, Jeff Gitelman and Al Shux. In an interview with Vogue, BANKS mentions she took the time to learn music production software Ableton and adds “My animal self is free in this album. It’s me at my core.”

The visual, which draws inspiration from movies such as Francis Ford Coppola’s Dracula and Robert Zemeckis’ Death Becomes Her, is co-directed by BANKS and Jenna Marsh. Having dealt with a traumatic breakup, a grueling tour and illness during the pandemic, we see our fav goth pop royalty stuff a demon in a box and dancing with her coven, symbolizing her strength and effectively slaying her own demons. She says “it’s about sitting back in the pocket…in the comfort that they can’t own you anymore… You are the most powerful version of you. A queen (or a king of course).

“this video represents the twisted, surreal, and playful world that I exist in as the devil. No demon can touch me as I am not tempted by their charm. Giveme a rose and I’ll eat it. In this world, I hypnotize and stuff every demon in a box while I dance, fly, and play with my devil sisters. Someone write my new name down.”

BANKS’ new album arrives later this year.
